Frequently asked questions about SCHUFA.
What is SCHUFA?+
SCHUFA is Germany’s largest credit reference agency; the name stands for “Schutzgemeinschaft für allgemeine Kreditsicherung” (Association for General Credit Protection). It collects data on consumers’ payment behaviour, which it receives from contractual partners such as banks. Data only exists if you have or had a business relationship with a SCHUFA partner.
Why do I need a SCHUFA credit report to search for a flat?+
Landlords want to be sure the rent will be paid reliably. A positive credit report proves your payment record and can improve your chances. Important: a landlord may not ask for a credit report before the viewing.
When do I get a SCHUFA entry?+
Companies may report data if they have granted you a loan or sold you goods or services on instalments. A negative entry requires that you have received two payment reminders and were informed of the impending entry four weeks in advance.
When is a negative SCHUFA entry deleted?+
Incorrect entries immediately; loans three years after the year of repayment; mail-order accounts three years after they were recorded; data from local court debtor registers after three years; insolvency proceedings up to ten years after full completion. Current account and credit card data is deleted when the account is closed.
How long does the credit check take?+
If you identify yourself with your ID card and IBAN, the document is available for download immediately. Delivery by post takes a few working days.
Is a SCHUFA credit check required for every rental application?+
No. Not all landlords ask for one, but it is common practice. Having an up-to-date report to hand speeds up the application process after the viewing.
