Finally in your new flat – you’ve made it! But what about your post? Have all your contractual and business partners, banks, friends and acquaintances been informed of your new address? A mail forwarding order (Nachsendeauftrag) from Deutsche Post can take a great weight off your shoulders. But did you know that only around 80% of letter mail is delivered by Deutsche Post? We have summarised what you should bear in mind so that all your post still reaches you after your move.
There is so much to think about when you move: hiring the right removal van, re-registering or switching providers for phone, internet, electricity and so on, organising helpers for the move,… And of course family, friends and acquaintances, as well as your employer, insurers and others, need to be told your new address. Remembering every contact? Almost impossible for most tenants. This is where mail forwarding orders can be worth their weight in gold, because they give you the certainty that your post will automatically be forwarded to your new address and will not fall into the wrong hands.
Never miss post again after moving
The advantages of a mail forwarding order are obvious. For as long as it is in place, it gives you the certainty that every item sent after your move will be delivered to your new address. You do not have to personally inform every sender of your new address straight away when you move. Mail forwarding orders can usually be extended for up to 24 months – so tenants can take the time they need to make all the important changes of address.
A mail forwarding order can therefore prevent a lot of the trouble that undelivered post can cause, making it indispensable for a smooth move. But is applying for a Deutsche Post forwarding order enough to make sure all my post still reaches me after the move?
Which postal service providers are active in my region?
Across Germany, around 80% of postal items are sent with Deutsche Post. In addition to the Deutsche Post forwarding order, there are numerous regional postal companies with which a forwarding order can be set up. Naturally, such a forwarding order only covers the postal items sent via that regional company.
You can search online for your own regional provider by town, postcode or region. As the majority of letters are sent with Deutsche Post, a forwarding order with them is always worthwhile. To make sure you do not miss any post delivered by local providers, you should also check which other postal service providers deliver your post.
Tip: have your mail forwarding order set up by Immomio and never miss post again. In addition to the Deutsche Post forwarding order, Immomio checks more than 15 local postal service providers for you and sets up forwarding orders with them if required.
How much does a mail forwarding order with Deutsche Post cost?
Depending on the duration, the costs range from €26.90 for one year to €34.90 for two years of forwarding. Regional postal companies offer forwarding orders sometimes free of charge and sometimes at higher prices than Deutsche Post.
We also recommend the free change-of-address notification, which can optionally be added to the Deutsche Post forwarding order. This automatically informs your existing contractual partners (insurers and banks, for example) of your new address.
